Looking back now, I don’t believe those opportunities appeared because I suddenly became lucky.
I think they appeared because, for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I was going.
My thoughts, my actions and my decisions were finally aligned.
It felt as though I’d tuned my internal sat-nav and life was simply presenting the next turning on the journey.
The massage clinic had never been the destination.
It was simply another stepping stone towards the dream I’d written down.
Then one afternoon another opportunity arrived that would change my life forever.
I’d been invited into a WhatsApp group for businesses around Madeley High Street.
One day, an estate agent posted a message saying there was a building available in Ironbridge before it officially went onto the market and asked whether anyone wanted to view it.
I went to have a look.
The moment I walked through the door, I felt something I still struggle to explain.
It was exactly the same feeling I’d had when the massage clinic opportunity appeared.
I didn’t want to look anywhere else.
I didn’t compare it to other buildings.
I simply knew.
This was it.
Looking back, I was incredibly naïve.
Thankfully.
Because if I’d known what was waiting for me—the commercial lease, the legal documents, the negotiations, the financial pressure, the responsibility and everything that comes with running your own premises—I honestly think fear would’ve convinced me to walk away.
Instead, I followed the feeling.
The lease negotiations were completely new territory. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was incredibly fortunate to have members from Nuffield with years of business experience who gave me advice, helped me understand what I was signing and guided me through a world I’d never experienced before.
I’ll always be grateful for their support because, without them, I don’t think I’d have had the confidence to move forwards.
Eventually, the paperwork was complete, the lease was signed and, in October 2022, I collected the keys.
Standing inside that empty building was one of the proudest moments of my life.
I had three months rent-free to transform it into the place I’d been visualising every single morning.
I could finally move my Personal Training and Sports Massage business out of Nuffield and begin building something that was truly my own.
At the same time, I’d just come out of a relationship and, in many ways, the building became my focus while I worked through that chapter of my life.
Instead of sitting with the heartbreak, I poured every ounce of my energy into creating this new beginning.
I had no idea what I was doing.
Suddenly I was learning about commercial leases, business rates, insurance, legal documents, project management and budgeting, all while trying to keep my existing business running.
My monthly outgoings increased dramatically and the responsibility felt enormous.
But I’d signed the lease now.
There was no turning back.
Over the next three months, life became complete chaos.
My days started around seven in the morning and often didn’t finish until one or two the following morning.
I’d coach Personal Training clients, treat Sports Massage appointments in Madeley, drive over to Ironbridge, paint walls, build treatment rooms, lay gym flooring, buy equipment, organise trades, spend every penny I’d saved and somehow try to manage the biggest project I’d ever taken on.
Every time I solved one problem, two more seemed to appear.
It was exhausting.
Overwhelming.
Completely consuming.
Looking back, I often think of that period as burning the boats.
There was no safety net anymore.
There was no option to quietly go back to how things were before.
The only direction was forwards.
It’s amazing what you’re capable of when retreat is no longer an option.
I had absolutely no idea then that this was only the beginning.
The real challenge was still to come.
